When Does a Candle Mold Need a Support Shell?

A support shell can improve stability for some large or irregular candle molds, but using one by default can add unnecessary work.

Why Support Shells Exist

The shell supports the silicone from outside so the cavity keeps its intended shape during pouring and cooling.

Projects That Benefit Most

Tall molds, wide open shapes and designs with uneven silicone thickness are more likely to benefit from support. Small regular pillar molds often do not.

Operator Workflow Matters

A shell adds an extra assembly step. The benefit should therefore be compared with how often the mold is used and how much dimensional stability it actually adds.

Design the Silicone and Shell Together

If a shell is needed, locating features and opening direction should be designed at the same time as the silicone mold rather than added after tooling.
